The case for Poros with young children is the water, and it is a geographic accident rather than anything the island arranged. Poros sits in a narrow channel rather than on open sea, and channel water behaves differently: shallow, sheltered, and calm on afternoons when an exposed island beach is working. For a family whose swimming plans depend on how the sea happens to be behaving that day, that is the single most useful thing about the place.

The second thing is the walking. The town is compact enough to cross on foot, which means no car, no car seats, no parking, and no drive to reach whatever the day needs. On a larger island the distances set the shape of the day — Kefalonia is honest about costing thirty to ninety minutes between sights. Poros costs a walk. Over a week the difference is substantial, and it shows up mostly as everybody being less tired.

The journey is short enough not to become the problem itself. About an hour on the fast boat from Piraeus sits inside the range small children handle without much difficulty, and it replaces a second flight rather than adding one: no second airport, no second security line, no third takeoff in the same day. Arriving in reasonable condition is worth more than most itinerary decisions are.

What Poros does not have is a marquee attraction on the island itself to build a day around, and with children that is a real trade-off rather than a hidden virtue. There is no cave, no excavation, no boat tour that becomes the thing everyone talks about afterward. The compensation is the channel crossing to Galatas — a short hop on a local boat, and reliably more interesting to a child than it has any right to be.

Then structure the day around the heat instead of against it. Water through the worst of the afternoon and dinner late is the shape that works here exactly as it does everywhere else in a Greek July.
