What do you need to enter Greece as a US citizen?
A passport valid well past your return date and issued within the last ten years. As of 2026 the EU Entry/Exit System takes fingerprints and a photo on first entry, which adds time at the border. ETIAS is not yet in force.
A US citizen needs a passport and nothing else to enter Greece for a short stay. The passport has to pass two separate tests, and they are easy to confuse.
The first is the obvious one: the passport has to stay valid for at least three months beyond the date you leave the Schengen area. The second is the one that is easy to miss. The passport also has to have been issued within the previous ten years. A passport renewed early once carries an issue date further back than its expiry date suggests, which is how a document that does not expire for another year can still fail at the desk. A child's passport is held to the same two tests. That is the rule as the US State Department and the European Commission stated it for travel in 2026, not a reading of our own documents.
The EU's Entry/Exit System has been in operation since April 10, 2026. It takes fingerprints and a photograph at passport control the first time you arrive, and it replaces the passport stamp. We came through ATH on July 6, 2026, with the system running, and did not time the queue. Passport control has not been a slow part of our arrivals; that is a recollection, not a measured figure.
ETIAS was not in force as of July 2026, so there was nothing to apply for and no fee to pay. The European Commission's earliest stated start was the last quarter of 2026. When it does start, the application is made on the EU's official ETIAS site.
