Entry requirements for Greece

A US citizen needs a passport and nothing else to enter Greece for a short stay. The part that catches people is not whether the passport is valid but how it has to be valid, because there are two independent tests and most travelers only check the first.

The first is the obvious one: the passport has to stay valid for at least three months beyond the date you leave the Schengen area. The second is the sneaky one. The passport also has to have been issued within the previous ten years. A passport renewed early once carries an issue date further back than its expiry date suggests, which is how a document that does not expire for another year can still fail at the desk.

Check both dates for everyone traveling, and check them early enough that a renewal is still possible.

Budget extra time at passport control on arrival at ATH. The EU's Entry/Exit System takes fingerprints and a photograph the first time you arrive, and that enrollment happens in the queue rather than in advance. It is a one-time cost rather than a recurring one, but it lands on the morning you are most tired, so plan the first day around a slower arrival than you would otherwise expect.

ETIAS is worth a specific note because it generates more anxiety than any other item here. As of July 2026 it is not in force, which means there is nothing to apply for and no fee to pay. The practical consequence is that any site inviting you to apply now is at best premature and at worst a scraper charging for a document that does not yet exist. If ETIAS does come into force before you travel, the application will be through the official EU portal — never a third party.

A child traveling with both parents needs their own passport and nothing more. A consent letter is a requirement for a child traveling with one parent or with neither, so it does not apply to a family crossing together, and the paperwork some sites suggest is unnecessary in that case.
