Melissani Cave

Melissani is a lake cave whose roof fell in long ago, and that collapse is the whole show. For a couple of hours around midday the sun comes straight through the opening and lands on the water, and the lake turns the electric blue the cave is known for. Arrive outside that window and you will still see a cave; arrive inside it and you will see the photograph you came for.

The visit itself is short. You descend to the water and a boatman rows you out under the open roof and through the covered section, and the whole thing — queue aside — takes about thirty minutes. In July the queue is the variable: the midday light window is also the busiest slot, so the practical play is to arrive just before the light does.

It works well with children. The boat ride is calm and brief enough to hold a young kid's attention, and the descent to the water is by steps rather than anything demanding. Pair it with a sheltered beach afternoon nearby and it makes a clean half-day.
