Getting to and around Kefalonia
Do you need a car in Kefalonia?
We did without one. For five nights in July 2026 we used taxis everywhere: the easiest option to get, though the fares add up. Kefalonia is the largest Ionian island and the places in our record sit far apart on winding roads, so the rides are long. We did not rent a car and cannot say how driving compares.
The flight from Athens is the easy part. It runs about an hour and lands at EFL outside Svoronata on the south of the island. We stayed at that end, a few minutes from the airport and the beaches near it, for five nights in July 2026.
We did not rent a car. We used taxis for the whole stay: they were the easiest option to get, and the fares add up over five nights. Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian islands and the places in our record sit a long way from each other — Melissani and Antisamos on the east, Myrtos on the north-west coast road, Assos and Fiskardo further north again. Costa Costa, one of the beaches we went to, was about an hour and a half's drive.
The rides are long because of the roads rather than the kilometers: coastal switchbacks that do not hurry, whoever is driving. We did not try the island by rental car, so we cannot tell you how it compares. That is how we got around, not a rule for the island.
