Getting to and around the Athens Riviera

Half an hour from the airport is the number that matters, and it is worth sitting with for a moment because it inverts what most people assume. The Riviera is closer to Athens International than central Athens is. Arriving travelers default to the city because the city is the famous thing, and end up hauling luggage into traffic to reach a place that was further away the whole time.

Within a single suburb you can put the car down. Glyfada's center is walkable in the way that matters on a hot evening — dinner, shops and the seafront sit close enough together that you are not making driving decisions after a long flight. If your stay is two nights in one place, you may not need a car at all.

Along the coast is where a car earns its keep. The coast road is the attraction here: it runs south through the suburbs and keeps going to Cape Sounion at the tip of the peninsula, which is the one drive on this stretch that everyone should do once. Sunset there lands close to nine in midsummer, so being on site by eight leaves time to walk the temple in decent light before the sun goes.

Going the other way, into the city, treat it as a day trip rather than a relocation. The Acropolis is the obvious target and it wants the eight o'clock opening slot, which from the coast means leaving in the dark end of early — but that same early start is what buys you the site before the heat and the crowds, and puts you back at the water by lunchtime. Doing it in that order is far better than the reverse.

The airport run at the end is the easy one. An early morning drop at ATH from this coast is a short, uncomplicated drive at an hour when nothing is moving, which is a large part of why finishing a trip here rather than downtown is the more comfortable arrangement.
